FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):

Jolly writes that the oceans are "declining far more rapidly" than expected due to "the impact of stresses on the oceans, which include acidification related to growing carbon dioxide emissions."(David Jolly)
Scientists warn that if people don't change their harmful ways, the oceans are at risk for "an unparalleled rate of regional extinctions of habitat types."(David Jolly)
Due to the unexpected and shocking increase in ocean pollution, we "now face losing marine species and entire marine ecosystems." (David Jolly)
Chris Reid, a professor of oceanography at the Marine Institute of Plymouth University, was interviewed by Jolly and said that "corals were particularly at risk because they were suffering both from the bleaching effect caused by rising sea temperatures and from acidification, which deprive the tiny organisms of the calcium carbonate they need to build their homes." (David Jolly)
Jolly writes that these stresses on the ocean, including acidification, rising ocean temperatures, and overfishing, are not only causing species and habitats to decrease, but is also "reducing the polar ice caps."(David Jolly)

Senior Project Proposal

Proposed Topic in the form of an  Essential Question:
How does overfishing, pollution from run-off, and the dumping of waste into the ocean affect marine life and human life?
Rationale for Choice
What about this topic appeals to you? Why did you choose it?
Since I was little, I have always been interested in marine life. I chose this topic because pollution in the ocean is a really big problem today and it has caused the extinction of some sea creatures and threatens other species.
What do you already know about this subject?
I know that overfishing, pollution, etc. have killed marine life and damaged their habitats and ecosystems. I also know that the dumping of waste can effect human life when toxins enter the fish we eat.
What are you hoping to learn about the subject?
I am hoping to learn more about the effects of these issues on both marine life and humans. I also want to learn what can be done to prevent it.
What are you most interested in regarding the topic?
I am interested in the ocean and marine life.
What potential risks or challenges do you foresee for your project?
It may be difficult to find a place to volunteer that is involved with this topic.
